Whilst my English might not be perfect, I want to share my truest, heartfelt feelings here with you. I hope you enjoy my story.
The Paralympic Dance Workshop ended in our vigorous laughing and talking. Though only 5 days long, it will always be the best memory of my life. Every movement in our training - whether it was solo dance, dual dance or multi-persons-dance - was developed by us using our own imagination and interest. The dances became ours as individuals.
Our trainer composed suitable music according to our self-developed movements, so we don't need to worry about control of rhythm. We were at the centre of the dance stage during the whole training, accompanied by the trainer's music. At that moment I understood that dances were born from our daily life. Our trainer encouraged us to think wider issues, without hesitation, and to create any movement without limitation. When we were chatting during break time, everybody was sharing the same experience, "I really am able to dance on stage." This had been something we had never dared to think about before - and now it was true. Our self-confidence was increased, life felt so good. From then on, we knew we would always feel better about life.
A disabled classmate arranged to work with an able-bodied classmate to develop a dual dance. Communication and comprehension between the disabled and the able-bodied improved through in this way. Through dance, we tried to express our love inside, our confidence and courage towards life. Previously, because of physical disability, we had been trying to escape from reality and the real outside world. And so we almost forget that our hearts are filled with love, confidence and courage towards life. It was the unconscious fear that stopped our potential from developing and displaying. But in fact, we have measureless potential and love, which supported us to input more for even better movement during the training. For us, the disabled, such a chance was rare and difficult to obtain, so we valued it very much.
The encouraging teaching techniques of our trainer inspired us all. If a movement was not performed well, our trainer said,"One more time, and it will be better." Thanks for her encouragement we would try again, and would receive the praise of our trainer and the applause of others. For us it was not just simple praise but a kind of firm recognition. Under our trainer's instruction and inspired by "one more time and it will be better", we tried very hard to finish every single movement. This was a key reason that all of us unified closely through the training.
Cooperation is crucial and plays vital function in the fours' dance. The movements of all four dancers should be merged harmoniously to achieve a graceful dance. And I finally understood that a dance performance requires cooperation and comprehension of all participants, requiring us to be hand-in-hand, side-by-side. The impact on us would contribute greatly in our future life, study and work.
The five days passed in pleasure and happiness. We enjoyed and forgot about our tiredness. A smile or words of encouragement would bring forward enormous courage and confidence to us. This innovative dance workshop also enhanced the communication between the disabled and able-bodied, working together.
Thanks to BNT Ballet Group, the Cultural and Education Section, British Embassy, Chinese Disabled Persons Federation, China Lions Club, and everyone who provided care and support to this successful Paralympic Dance Workshop. Thank you for providing such an opportunity for us to exercise and display. I believe every member of this workshop will keep the beautiful memory deeply, and I do think this is the beginning of our brighter future.
